Saturday, 08 June 2013, Mogadishu - H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, today called on all Somalis to work with UNSOM, the new UN Mission in Somalia.
Welcoming H.E. Nicholas Kay, the new Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of UNSOM, to Villa Somalia for their first meeting since the opening of the new integrated mission, the President hosted a joint press conference and said:
“It gives me very great pleasure to welcome H.E. Ambassador Kay to Mogadishu and to formally welcome UNSOM to Somalia.
“We were thrilled to be consulted on the new mission and the appointment of the SRSG, and for the first time in twenty two years, we now have one UN mission in Somalia.
“We must all work with UNSOM and help them to help us. The new integrated approach will improve delivery and an effective partnership with the UN is essential for the new Somalia. We thank you for supporting our government’s agenda of peace, security and nation-building.
“UNSOM arrival comes exactly as Somalia is taking big strides forward. It is a vote of confidence by the UN and a demonstration of the world’s commitment to Somalia’s recovery and revival.
“There are many challenges ahead but Somalia must rise to them and lead their resolution. But only with support can Somali people start to benefit from the recovery that is underway.”
The new Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Nicholas Kay said, ”We can see the green shoots of a new beginning for Somalia. The Somali people are hopeful for the future again and have high expectations of us. We need to aim high. The international community shares the aspirations of the Somali people. I appreciate their full backing for the new UN assistance mission in Somalia, UNSOM.
“I am grateful for the trust of the Somali people and the Government. And I am dedicated to seeing Somalia blossom again, bringing peace and prosperity for all Somali people.”
