One Death and Nine Injuries Reported in Ukrainian Drone Strike on Kursk, Officials Confirm

An overnight drone strike by Ukraine resulted in the death of an 85-year-old woman, left nine individuals injured, and ignited fires in multiple buildings in the Russian city of Kursk, which is located near the Ukrainian border, according to regional officials.

“Kursk has endured a significant enemy assault overnight,” stated the Kursk region administration in a message on the Telegram app.

The drone attack caused damage to a multi-storey apartment building, with several apartments catching fire, as reported by Sergei Kotlyarov, the acting mayor of Kursk, on Telegram.

Residents have been relocated to a nearby school, he mentioned.

The extent of the attack remains unclear; however, Russia’s Baza and SHOT Telegram channels, known for sharing information sourced from security service and law enforcement channels, indicated that over 20 explosions rattled the city.

Images were shared showing what appeared to be a multi-storey residential building engulfed in flames at night.

Reuters has not independently verified these reports.

Both parties claim they do not target civilians in the ongoing conflict, which began over three years ago when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces have conducted cross-border operations into the Kursk region, of which the city of Kursk serves as the administrative center, although Russian troops have regained much of the territory initially lost.

This drone strike comes in the wake of a Russian missile and bomb assault on the Ukrainian city of Sumy over the weekend, which resulted in 35 fatalities and left at least 119 injured.
