Kyiv was jolted by a fresh round of explosions as Russia kept up its assault on the Ukrainian capital, with NATO leaders gathering for a summit in Turkey.

AFP journalists in the city said they heard a first powerful blast before Kyiv’s air-raid sirens even began, followed soon after by four more.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a missile strike sparked fires in warehouses in one district, while a “non-residential building” caught fire in another.

“The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles. Stay in shelters!” Klitschko wrote on social media.

The ‌air alert remained in effect for about an hour. Two people ‌were reportedly injured, and one required hospital treatment.

Elsewhere, Ukraine also reported an earlier missile strike on the southern port city of Odesa that injured 10 people, according to regional governor Oleh Kiper. Eight of the wounded were being treated in hospital.

The latest barrage follows Russian strikes on Monday — including multiple missile hits on Kyiv — that killed 30 people in Ukraine.

In Ankara for the NATO summit, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Kyiv’s allies to intensify support for the country’s air defences, as Ukraine faces shortages of key interceptor missiles needed to bring down incoming Russian fire.

While Ukraine has been able to contend with waves of Russian drones, it has struggled against what it describes as a new Kremlin approach: unleashing ballistic missiles on Kyiv as air-defence stocks run low.
