Somaliland’s Perilous Path: A Betrayal of the Somali People

Somaliland, a de facto independent state in the Horn of Africa, has been navigating a precarious existence for decades. Its leader, Muse Bihi, has taken a reckless gamble that could have disastrous consequences for the Somali people, both within Somaliland and beyond. By inviting Ethiopia, a historical rival with territorial ambitions, into Somaliland’s internal affairs, Bihi is endangering the very sovereignty he seeks to protect.

Ethiopia’s covetous eye on Somali lands and maritime control dates back centuries. Emperor Menelik II, in the late 19th century, expressed his desire to reclaim Ethiopia’s lost coastline, even if it meant relying on foreign powers. This imperialistic sentiment was echoed by Haile Selassie in the 20th century, culminating in Ethiopia’s seizure of vast Somali territories and its aggressive claims on Djibouti.

Premier Abiy Ahmed’s current administration continues this legacy of expansionism. Ethiopia’s strategic documents openly declare its intention to undermine neighboring countries’ sovereignty and violate international law to achieve its maritime ambitions.

The threat posed by Ethiopia has compelled neighboring states like Eritrea and Djibouti to take drastic measures to safeguard their sovereignty. Eritrea has militarized its entire population, while Djibouti has forged strategic alliances with global powers.

Bihi’s misguided agreement with Ethiopia, which he claimed would lead to Somaliland’s recognition, is nothing more than a trap. Ethiopia’s true intentions were exposed when its state minister openly declared the country’s right to have its own port. This reveals that Ethiopia’s goal is not Somaliland’s recognition but rather territorial acquisition and control of the sea.

Bihi’s actions are reminiscent of the events that led to Eritrea’s annexation by Ethiopia in 1962. His misguided path threatens the independence of the Somali people.

While Eritrea and Djibouti have taken decisive steps to protect their sovereignty, Somaliland’s ruling politicians and their supporters are naively sleepwalking into a trap. Abiy Ahmed’s ambitions are clear: he wants the sea and does not care about Somaliland’s fate.

The rest of Somalis must stand united against this threat. They must tell Abiy that his ambitions will not be tolerated and urge Bihi to wake up from his slumber. The future of Somaliland and the Somali people hangs in the balance.
