Witnesses said they saw a man suspected to be Thomas Matthew Crooks with a gun on the roof of a building not far from where the protest was taking place minutes before the shots were fired.
20-year-old Crooks was killed a short time later but the motive behind his attack is not yet known.
The demonstration was attended by officers from various security agencies.
