The interim government of Bangladesh will be sworn in today
Aug 08 (Jowhar.com) – Today, Thursday, the leaders of the interim government that will govern Bangladesh are scheduled to be sworn in after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, which ruled the country for the past 15 years.
The man who will lead the new government, Muhammad Yunus, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka this afternoon, the capital of Bangladesh, after leaving Paris to participate in the World Olympics.
Yunus was appointed by the military commander, General Wakirul Zaman, after consultation with the president, the leaders of the protesting youth, and the civil society organizations.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin, a non-powerful president whose status is honorary, dissolved parliament on Tuesday, paving the way for an interim government.
Demonstrations against Sheikh Hasina’s government that lasted for weeks killed more than 300 people.
The people who staged the demonstrations, mostly young people and university students, were angry about the law issued by the government which stated that 30% of the vacant jobs in the government should be given to the families and relatives of the people who participated in the war of independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971.
The man who will now lead the interim government, Mohammed Yunus, is an economist and banker. He gained fame for his remarkable work in the development of Bangladesh’s economy, especially the loans that his Grameen bank gave to poor but innovative people.
This work that he started in 1983, he lifted thousands of people out of poverty and turned into small businessmen and big pockets. That action earned him the international peace award he received in 2006.
