Former Tuareg Rebel Launches Resistance Movement Against Coup in Niger

Former Tuareg rebel and Nigerien State Minister Rhissa Ag Boula announced on Wednesday the creation of a new movement called the Council of the Resistance for the Republic (CRR) in order to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, who was arrested during a coup on July 26.

The movement will support international efforts to restore constitutional order, he said in a statement released Tuesday night.

The West African bloc prioritizes diplomacy in resolving the crisis in Niger, while maintaining its threat of military intervention to “restore constitutional order,” as explained by Joël Atayi-Guédegbé, an independent communication and governance consultant, in an interview with Cyril Payen, ‘s special envoy to Benin.

“Diplomacy is the best way forward” to resolve the crisis in Niger, said ECOWAS spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, hours after the military junta from the coup rejected the visit of a delegation to Niamey, citing “security reasons.”
