In a fresh push to revive Washington’s Gaza peace proposal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law, after Kushner held a rare round of talks with Hamas-linked figures in Egypt.
A diplomatic source said Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya attended some of the meetings mediators held in Cairo yesterday with Mr Kushner and Mr Trump’s Board of Peace envoy for Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov.
A photograph released by the Egyptian hosts did not show Mr al-Hayya, but it pictured Mr Kushner seated at a table with members of the Board of Peace. Qatar and Turkey, described as key mediators alongside Egypt, also took part.
The Cairo meetings represent Mr Kushner’s second known encounter with representatives of Hamas, the Palestinian militant group the United States designates as a terrorist movement.
Mr Kushner previously met Hamas officials in October 2025 alongside US envoy Steve Witkoff, talks that helped secure an agreement leading to a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the remaining hostages taken by Hamas during the 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel.
In late July, President Trump said an agreement had been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.
But Mr Netanyahu — who is seeking re-election in a vote due in October — has openly rejected Mr Trump’s plan.
President Trump has said the deal would be implemented in phases, with Israeli forces pulling out of Gaza as disarmament moved forward and an International Stabilization Force working with a new Palestinian police force to secure the enclave.
Hamas has said it accepted the plan, while stressing that implementation would hinge on Israel first fulfilling its own commitments, including withdrawing and stopping attacks.
