South African comic book artist paves the way to a wider, international audience

Graphic novel artist Loyizo Mkize is a household name in his native South Africa. But last month he broke the boundaries of his popularity by signing a contract with the giant American comics publisher DC Comics.

Mkize is known as the artist who created the first local superhero eight years ago, Kwez, a trendy 19-year-old man living in Gold City, a metropolis very similar to Johannesburg.

He is now working on an animated film with Kwez and his artwork will soon be on display at a gallery in Cape Town.

As more African comics come out, the creators hope the readership will grow to fuel the industry.
