A medal meant to celebrate a run through Sydney has ended up sending the internet on an unexpected detour to Germany.

Organisers of the 2026 Sydney Marathon have drawn amused reactions online after revealing a finishers’ medal that appears to feature a stadium in Munich.

The two-sided medal carries an engraved Sydney skyline with course landmarks such as the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge — but also includes the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Marathon officials acknowledged what they called an “unfortunate error” on the medal, saying it shows the German venue’s distinctive shape and diamond-patterned exterior rather than the flatter profile of Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

“A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium,” a Sydney Marathon spokesperson said.

“We’re not going to run from it, it was an unfortunate error, though it’s certainly given everyone something to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humour.”

On social media, the response was largely playful.

“Oh, dear. Oh, this is bad,” wrote Instagram account @morningcoffeerun, speculating that someone may have confused the venues during an online search for Allianz.

The Munich stadium itself joined in on the joke.

“Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!” Allianz Arena posted on Instagram.

“Perhaps they tried to find something else they had in common: Allianz Arena – Sydney Opera – Unique Architecture – Both are worth a visit!”

Australian media outlets also leaned into the mix-up.

“The medal that will put Sydney on the map. The wrong map,” read a headline in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The medal’s other side has attracted praise for its blue-and-gold artwork by Indigenous artist Ambrose Killian, who told AFP he did not take part in designing the Sydney skyline featured on the reverse.

Organisers say they are expecting a record turnout of more than 40,000 participants, each receiving the medal as a “badge of honour” for completing the 42.2-kilometre (26.2-mile) course.

“With the event a week away, this is the medal our finishers will receive,” the Sydney Marathon spokesperson said.

“Behind every one of these medals is months of early mornings, long runs and quiet determination, and having it placed around your neck at the Sydney Opera House is a moment our participants will never forget,” the spokesperson added.

“It’s a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique.”
