Ukraine denounced on Monday the warning shots fired by Russia towards a cargo ship heading to the Ukrainian port of Izmail in the Black Sea.

“The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the provocative actions carried out by the Russian Federation on August 13 in the Black Sea against the Turkish cargo ship ‘Sukru Okan’, which was heading to the port of Izmail,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The Russian navy has grossly violated the United Nations Charter, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and other international law standards. These actions illustrate Russia’s deliberate policy of threatening freedom of navigation and the security of merchant shipping in the Black Sea.”

The Ukrainian army has retaken three square kilometers of territory near Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, one of the key areas of the current counter-offensive by Kiev forces, announced Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Ganna Maliar on television.
