Wilfried Zaha’s Ivory Coast takes on Equatorial Guinea

Ivory Coast is one of the favorites to win the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Cameroon, with some of the continent’s top talents, in the form of Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and Ajax Sébastien Haller. Follow their opening match against Equatorial Guinea on FRANCE 24’s live blog.

Ivory Coast has long been one of the most impressive African national teams – with one of the continent’s greatest players of all time, Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, winning CAN in 1992 and 2015.

Drogba is long gone – as are most of the players who won the Africa Cup of Nations trophy six years ago, such as Yaya Touré and Kolo Touré. But new talent has poured into Ivory Coast’s ranks, most notably Zaha, who is widely regarded as the Premier League’s biggest player outside of his top clubs, and Haller, the Champions League’s top scorer so far this season.

Equatorial Guinea are much less well known but they have a decent chance of winning and going far in the tournament: They came fourth at the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 and made impressive performances in recent World Cup qualifiers, beating one of Africa’s top teams, Tunisia, in November.
