At least 50 killed in Guatemala as bus falls from bridge

A bus lost control and plunged off a highway bridge into a contaminated ravine in Guatemala City, resulting in the deaths of at least 51 individuals and leaving some survivors trapped, according to a spokesperson from the city’s fire department.

The overcrowded bus was on its way to the capital from San Agustin Acasaguastlan along a heavily trafficked route when it fell roughly 20 meters from Puente Belice, a bridge that spans a roadway and a creek.

Spokesman Carlos Hernandez reported that the remains of 36 men and 15 women have been transported to a provincial morgue established for the tragic incident.

Rescue teams and security personnel were present at the site of the disaster.

Images posted by the fire department on social media depicted the bus partially submerged in wastewater, surrounded by the bodies of victims.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims who woke up to this devastating news today,” he stated.

“Their suffering resonates with me,” Mr. Arevalo remarked on social media.
