Egypt to Unveil Reconstruction Plan for Gaza Focused on Resettlement Solutions

Egypt is set to “introduce a comprehensive vision for the reconstruction” of Gaza, ensuring that Palestinians can remain on their land, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry.

This announcement followed US President Donald Trump’s comments about potentially halting aid to Egypt and Jordan if they do not align with his plan to take control of Gaza and relocate its residents to their countries.

The foreign ministry expressed that Egypt “hopes to collaborate” with Mr. Trump’s administration on this issue, aiming to “achieve a fair resolution to the Palestinian cause”.

Egypt’s plan is designed to facilitate the reconstruction of Gaza “in a clear and decisive manner that guarantees the Palestinian people can stay on their land, and respects their legitimate and legal rights”.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt, who exchanged state visit invitations with Trump last month (though the visits have yet to be arranged), emphasized the need for reconstructing Gaza “without displacing Palestinians”.

In a conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Sisi “underlined the importance of commencing the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip… without displacing Palestinians and in a manner that safeguards their rights… to live on their land”.

Additionally, Sisi remarked that the establishment of a Palestinian state is “the sole guarantee for achieving lasting peace” in the region, as stated by his office.

Mr. Trump has proposed that the US assume control of Gaza and evacuate Palestinians, envisioning the transformation of the devastated area into the “Riviera of the Middle East” after relocating Palestinians to places like Egypt and Jordan.

These comments have incited global outrage, with Arab nations denouncing the proposal and reaffirming their commitment to a two-state solution featuring an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

On Monday, Egypt’s foreign ministry declared its rejection of “any compromise” that would violate the rights of Palestinians, including their right to “remain on the land”, following a meeting between Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his US counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington.
