Founder of Spain’s Mango Fashion Brand Passes Away in Tragic Accident
The founder and proprietor of the fashion brand Mango, Isak Andic, passed away yesterday in a mountain incident, according to police reports. He was 71 years old.
The businessman slipped and fell more than 100 meters from a cliff while hiking with family members in the Montserrat caves in proximity to Barcelona, a police spokesperson confirmed.
“His absence creates a significant void, yet each of us embodies his legacy and the testament of his accomplishments. It is our responsibility … to ensure that Mango remains the endeavor that Isak envisioned and took pride in,” stated Mango’s CEO, Toni Ruiz.
Born in Istanbul, Mr. Andic relocated with his family to the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia during the 1960s, eventually establishing Mango in 1984 with the assistance of his older brother Nahman.
The brand achieved remarkable success, emerging in a post-Franco Spain where consumers were eager for contemporary fashion following decades of dictatorship.
According to Forbes, he had a net worth of $4.5 billion.
At the time of his passing, Mr. Andic held the position of non-executive chairman of the company.
He was considered a competitor to Amancio Ortega, the founder of Inditex, the largest fast-fashion retail corporation in the world.
Mango reported a turnover of €3.1 billion in 2023, with 33% of its business conducted online and a presence in over 120 markets.
As noted on its website, the company employs approximately 15,500 people globally.
