Google Maps to Change ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America’ for U.S. Users
According to Alphabet’s Google, the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ will be changed to ‘Gulf of America’ following its official update in the US Geographic Names System, as stated in a social media post.
This change will be reflected in the US, while the name will continue to be ‘Gulf of Mexico’ in Mexico.
Users outside of both countries will see both names displayed on Google Maps. When asked for comment, a Google spokesperson directed Reuters to the company’s post on X.
On Friday, the Trump administration’s Interior Department announced the official renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and the renaming of Denali, the tallest peak in North America, back to Mount McKinley.
