Historic Sale: First AI-Created Artwork to Be Auctioned at Leading Auction House

The robot artist ‘Ai-Da Robot’ is set to make history later this month as the first humanoid robot artist to have an artwork auctioned by a prominent auction house.

‘A.I. God’, an impressive large-scale portrait of Alan Turing, the father of modern computing, will be auctioned at Sotheby’s Digital Art Sale, taking place from 31 October to 7 November.

This 7.5-foot tall artwork was created using Ai-Da Robot’s artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and was first showcased at the United Nations in May as part of a five-panel Polyptych.

‘A.I. God’ is anticipated to fetch between £100,000 and £150,000 (€120,000 – €180,000) at the auction.

The 7.5-foot tall artwork was created utilizing Ai-Da Robot’s artificial intelligence.

Aidan Meller, Director of the Ai-Da Robot Studio, noted that Alan Turing voiced concerns about the implications of AI as early as the 1950s.

“Ai-Da’s portrait eerily captures Alan Turing, featuring muted tones and fragmented facial planes, set against a backdrop of shadowy forms of the Bombe machine,” Mr. Meller explained.

“The artwork appears to reflect the challenges Turing warned we would encounter regarding the management of AI,” he continued.

Ai-Da is characterized as an ultra-realistic robot artist that creates drawings, paintings, sculptures, and performance art.

Ai-Da was developed in Oxford and programmed on an international scale.
