Israel Targets Suburb in Gaza City, According to Palestinian Medics

The Israeli military has intensified its operations in northern Gaza, targeting a suburb of Gaza City, according to medics, and has urged residents in the central region to evacuate areas from which militants are launching rocket fire.

Air strikes in Shejaia, a suburb of Gaza City, resulted in the deaths of at least eight Palestinians, as reported by emergency services.

There has been no immediate response from the Israeli military, and it is unclear who the victims of the attack were.

In al-Buriej, located in central Gaza, the Israeli army stated that it hit a militant in an area where rockets had been launched the previous day.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that two individuals lost their lives in that strike, with an additional 15 casualties resulting from an airstrike in Jabalia.

No immediate confirmation has come from Gaza health officials, while Israel’s military claims to have targeted Hamas fighters in the operation.

Much of the vicinity surrounding the northern towns of Beit Hanoun, Jabalia, and Beit Lahiya has been cleared of residents and demolished, raising suspicions—denied by Israel—that it plans to establish a buffer zone in the area after the hostilities conclude.

Israel asserts that its nearly three-month-long campaign in northern Gaza aims to prevent Hamas militants from regrouping.

The military claims its directives for civilians to evacuate are intended to protect them from harm.

Palestinian and United Nations officials argue that no areas are truly safe in Gaza and that such evacuations exacerbate the humanitarian plight of the population.

As per the Palestinian civil defense, over 1,500 tents housing displaced individuals across Gaza were inundated by heavy rain over the past two days, leaving residents vulnerable to the cold and damaging their belongings.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has reportedly resulted in the deaths of more than 45,500 Palestinians, according to health officials in the Hamas-controlled territory.

Most of the 2.3 million inhabitants of the territory have been displaced, and large portions of the coastal strip lie in ruins.

The conflict was ignited by Hamas’ attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, which claimed the lives of 1,200 individuals and led to 251 people being taken hostage in Gaza, according to Israeli reports.

The Palestinian Authority has temporarily suspended the broadcasting of Qatar’s Al Jazeera TV for “inciting material,” as reported by the Palestinian official news agency WAFA.

A committee composed of ministers from the culture, interior, and communications ministries decided to halt operations over what they deemed “inciting material and deceptive reports that incite discord” within the country.

This decision is unlikely to be enforced in Hamas-controlled Gaza, where the Palestinian Authority lacks authority.

Al Jazeera TV faced criticism from the Palestinian Authority last week due to its coverage of the ongoing standoff between Palestinian security forces and militant fighters in the Jenin camp in the occupied West Bank.
