Italian Nun Detained for Alleged Mafia Associations
Italian law enforcement has apprehended a nun renowned for her work in prisons, along with 24 others, as part of an investigation into the ‘Ndrangheta mafia.According to sources, Sister Anna Donelli, a volunteer at Milan’s San Vittore prison, is suspected of colluding with the mafia and acting as an intermediary between the criminal organization and its incarcerated members.
The 57-year-old nun is also widely recognized for her contributions to Milan’s underprivileged neighborhoods.
In February, she received the ‘Golden Panettone’, a prestigious civic award presented annually in Milan.
The announcement did not disclose the names of those involved in the raid.
Those accused face various charges, including mafia association, vote-buying, illegal possession of firearms, money laundering, loan sharking, drug trafficking, and fraudulent invoicing, as detailed in the police statement.
The alleged group was involved in generating €12 million worth of invoices for fictitious transactions, allowing complicit business owners to reduce their income and evade taxes in exchange for a portion of the profits paid to the mobsters.
Originating from the impoverished southern region of Calabria, the ‘Ndrangheta has become Italy’s most formidable mafia organization, spreading throughout Europe and beyond while infiltrating white-collar crime.
