Mitch McConnell to Step Down After 40 Years in the US Senate
Mitch McConnell has declared that he will resign from the US Senate. The influential Republican figure played a key role in guiding the country’s recent political shift to the right but had a tumultuous relationship with US President Donald Trump.
As he turns 83 today and faces declining health, Mr. McConnell’s decision not to pursue reelection at the end of his term was not entirely unexpected.
Last year, Mr. McConnell stepped down after holding the position of the longest-serving leader in Senate history.
“I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last,” Mr. McConnell remarked in comments released ahead of time by the Associated Press.
“Seven times, my fellow Kentuckians have elected me to the Senate,” he stated.
“Each day in between, I’ve been honored by the trust they’ve placed in me to represent them here,” he concluded.
