Musk Reports Significant Cyberattack on X
Elon Musk has announced that X experienced a significant cyberattack, resulting in widespread outages for users of the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“There was (and still is) a substantial cyberattack against X,” Mr. Musk stated in a post on the platform.
He attributed a crash of the site last year, during a scheduled interview with Donald Trump, to this cyberattack, though he provided no evidence to support his claim.
In his post, he included a message from a DogeDesigner account on X that some Reddit users speculated might be a front for the tycoon himself.
Mr. Musk is the CEO of Tesla, his electric vehicle company.
“Conducting an attack of this scale would require a significant amount of (money),” stated a post from the Jammies account in the conversation.
“Who possesses the resources to finance this?”
He also suggested that such an attack would necessitate immense resources, hinting that it could be orchestrated by a nation or a large, organized group.
According to monitoring sources, outages on the X social media platform left tens of thousands of users unable to access the site.
Reports of issues began early this morning, with users across Asia, Europe, and North America indicating they were unable to use the platform, according to the Downdetector tracking service.
At the height of the outage, over 40,000 users reported problems, the site revealed.
The majority of the reports came from individuals attempting to access X on mobile devices, although users on web browsers also indicated the service was down.
“Is Twitter always breaking?” questioned a post by @Lalaslovely in the Downdetector chat section.
Since Mr. Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in late 2022, most of the staff either left or were terminated, raising concerns over whether adequate personnel were available to maintain the platform’s safety and stability.
