One Dead, Eleven Injured in Attack on Ukrainian Apartment Building
A ballistic missile strike on an apartment building in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih resulted in one death and 11 injuries, according to local authorities.
Ukraine denounced the attack that occurred on Christmas Eve.
“The attackers struck directly at a four-storey residential building containing 32 apartments,” stated Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the city’s military administration, in a Telegram post.
Regional governor Serhiy Lysak reported that one man, whose body was recovered from beneath the debris, could not be saved by paramedics.
Governor Lysak shared images of rescuers sifting through a significant pile of rubble, helping an individual covered in dust and transferring them into an ambulance.
“There may still be individuals trapped under the debris,” he remarked just before 6 p.m. local time (4 p.m. Irish time), over two hours after the missile strike.
Kryvyi Rih, the birthplace of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, is a steel-producing city with a pre-war population exceeding 600,000.
Located roughly 65 km from the nearest Russian-occupied area, the outskirts of Kryvyi Rih have been frequently targeted by Russian missile attacks throughout the conflict.
While Russia maintains that it does not intentionally target civilians, thousands of lives have been lost since the beginning of its invasion in 2022.
