Pope’s Condition Remains ‘Stable’ as Treatment Continues
Pope Francis is currently in stable condition and continuing his treatment, according to a statement from the Vatican, following his admission to the hospital two days ago for a respiratory tract infection.
The statement mentioned that he spent the afternoon alternating between resting and reading.
Earlier today, Pope Francis expressed his apologies for missing a mass at the Vatican, noting that he is still undergoing treatment for bronchitis and thanking his healthcare team for their attentive care.
The 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized in Rome on Friday due to a respiratory tract infection. His doctors have instructed him to rest, preventing him from delivering his usual Sunday prayer to pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square.
“I appreciate the affection, prayers, and support that you have shown me during these days, and I want to extend my gratitude to the doctors and healthcare workers at this hospital for their dedication,” he remarked.
His spokesperson informed reporters at the Vatican that he had a good night’s sleep, had breakfast, and read some newspapers, while his treatment is ongoing.
The cardinal who conducted mass in Pope Francis’s absence began the service with a supportive message.
“Our initial thought is for Pope Francis. We pray for his health, expressing our gratitude for the vision and support he continuously provides us,” Cardinal Jose Tolentino de Mendonca stated during the mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.
This mass was dedicated to honoring artists during the Catholic Church’s Holy Year.
The cardinal’s sentiments were echoed by well-wishers present at the Vatican.
Colombian pilgrim Patricia Afanador shared her disappointment at not seeing the pope, emphasizing that his health is the priority.
“(It’s sad), but his recovery is far more important,” she said. “We hold him in our hearts.”
The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will remain hospitalized for as long as necessary to ensure his treatment continues effectively.
