Powerful Earthquake Off California Coast, Tsunami Warning Lifted

A magnitude 7 earthquake has struck off the northern coast of California, leading to a tsunami warning that was subsequently lifted for a significant area along the California and Oregon coasts, as reported by officials.

Approximately 4.7 million residents in California and Oregon were initially placed under the tsunami warning before it was rescinded, according to the National Weather Service.

The earthquake, occurring at a shallow depth of 10km, was located about 63km west of Ferndale, a sparsely populated area along the northern California coastline, as indicated by the US Geological Survey.

The National Tsunami Center had issued a warning covering a long segment of the US West Coast, stretching from Dunes City, Oregon, down to San Francisco and San Jose, California, situated 643km away.

Approximately 19,000 customers in Humboldt County were left without power, a significant increase from nearly zero before the quake, based on information from PowerOutage.us.

The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom shared on social media that the governor “is currently meeting with state emergency officials and working to ensure the safety of Californians.”
