Sydney’s Olympic Stadium to be the Venue for the 2027 Rugby World Cup Final

It has been announced that Sydney’s Olympic Stadium will be the venue for the final of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

On Thursday, organizers confirmed the seven cities in Australia that will host the 24-team tournament.

The Sydney stadium, which accommodates 83,000 spectators, previously witnessed the thrilling 2003 final, where the Wallabies were defeated by Jonny Wilkinson’s England in extra time.

Earlier this year, the Republic of Ireland women’s soccer team faced Australia at this venue during the opening match of the Women’s World Cup.

Sydney is also set to host two quarter-finals, two semi-finals, and the bronze final. Additional matches will be held across other major Australian cities such as Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.

Phil Waugh, chief executive of Rugby Australia and a player in the 2003 World Cup, expressed that the event’s legacy will endure for many years.

“The Rugby World Cup is one of the largest sporting events globally, and Australia is thrilled to host the world for the 2027 edition,” Waugh stated.

“Competing in the final of 2003 was one of the greatest honors of my career, and I am thrilled that this generation of Wallabies will have the chance to feel the emotion, excitement, and joy of wearing the gold jersey in front of our passionate fans at a World Cup held in our own country.”

Brett Robinson, chair of World Rugby, shared his excitement about collaborating with the host cities to bring the tournament to life.

“The choice of these remarkable host cities underscores our commitment to bringing the Rugby World Cup to as many Australians as possible, maximizing the tournament’s positive influence and sporting legacy within all host communities,” he remarked.

“Australia’s famous cities and vibrant culture will foster an extraordinary atmosphere for both fans and players, uniting the nation for six unforgettable weeks.”
