Thousands Participate in Worldwide Run for Displaced Individuals

Numerous individuals worldwide are participating in a run to express solidarity with those who face forced displacement or endure extreme poverty, according to organizers.

The ‘Global Solidarity Run’, arranged by the Irish-based charity Sanctuary Runners, is taking place in 75 countries, having commenced in the Solomon Islands last night and concluding in French Polynesia tomorrow morning.

Various runs are also being held throughout Ireland as part of this initiative, which is backed by Irish Aid, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Ireland Funds.

At a run in Dublin, former Dublin footballer and CEO of Sanctuary Runners, Michael Darragh Macauley, stated: “Due to conflict, poverty, and climate change, individuals are compelled to leave their homes and loved ones in search of safety and a better life.”

Solomon Islander Bettie Perry, who resides in Co Tipperary, had family members participate in the initial leg of the event.

“We are incredibly pleased that the run began in my small, often-overlooked country,” she remarked.

“Due to climate change and rising sea levels, people are forced to relocate for safety, resulting in many leaving the islands.

“We are honored to have this chance to demonstrate solidarity with others around the world who are displaced through no fault of their own,” Ms. Perry emphasized.

In a message to participants, President Michael D. Higgins highlighted that the event exemplifies “the solidarity which is essential at all levels.”
