Universal Studios Set to Launch Its First European Theme Park Near London
The US media giant Comcast Corp is set to establish its inaugural Universal theme park and resort in Europe, located in Bedford, just north of London, with an anticipated opening in 2031, according to the British government.
During the construction phase, the project is projected to generate 20,000 jobs, alongside an additional 8,000 roles in the hospitality and creative sectors upon its completion.
In its initial year, the park is expected to draw 8.5 million visitors, a figure that currently ranks just below Disneyland Paris in Europe.
Universal Studios operates five resorts and parks across the US in California and Florida, as well as in Singapore, Japan, and China, featuring attractions based on IPs like Jurassic Park and Harry Potter.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer meets with Comcast Corporation President Mike Cavanagh.
The development plans for the site encompass a theme park with multiple themed lands, a 500-room hotel, and a complex for retail, dining, and entertainment.
During a presentation in London yesterday, Comcast President Mike Cavanagh expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating he “could not be more excited” about bringing a Universal theme park and resort to the UK.
In 2023, Comcast acquired a former brickworks site in Bedfordshire, approximately 88km north of London. The company already owns Sky, which is the largest pay-TV provider in Europe.
Comcast has been in discussions with the British government since last year regarding the potential transformation of the site into a theme park.
The Labour government, which has vowed to enhance investment in infrastructure since taking office last year, has also approved the expansion of Luton Airport, located about 32km from the Universal site, enhancing the region’s international connectivity.
The establishment of the theme park and resort is pending planning permission, as stated by the government.
