WHO Reports: Three Health Workers Injured and Dozens Detained at Hospital in Northern Gaza
The World Health Organization has announced that it has re-established communication with staff at the besieged Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza, confirming that three health workers sustained injuries and 44 were detained.
Kamal Adwan, the only remaining operational hospital in northern Gaza, “is still under siege, but we successfully connected with the staff,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on X late last night.
“Three health workers and another employee were injured, 44 health workers have been detained, and four ambulances have been damaged,” he reported.
Yesterday, Gaza’s health ministry accused Israeli forces of storming the Kamal Adwan hospital located in the Jabalia camp, where a significant operation was launched earlier this month.
The Israeli military stated that its forces were active around Kamal Adwan but claimed it was “not aware of live fire and strikes in the hospital’s vicinity.”
In the midst of the turmoil, the WHO reported yesterday afternoon that it lost contact with the staff at Kamal Adwan, with Mr. Tedros describing the situation in an earlier post on X as “deeply disturbing.”
Mr. Tedros mentioned that the WHO and partner organizations had reached the hospital late Wednesday night, successfully transferring 23 patients and 26 caregivers to Al-Shifa Hospital, the main medical facility in Palestinian territory.
“Kamal Adwan Hospital has been overwhelmed with nearly 200 patients and a steady influx of horrific trauma cases. It is also packed with hundreds of individuals seeking refuge,” he shared.
In his follow-up post, Mr. Tedros emphasized that “approximately 600 patients, health workers, and others are currently taking shelter in the hospital.”
“The siege and attacks on health workers occurred just hours after the WHO-led mission that delivered essential supplies to keep the facility operational and transported critical patients to Al-Shifa Hospital,” he said.
“We call for the protection of hospitals, health workers, and patients. Ceasefire!”
