A 75-year-old man returned to Northern Ireland following extradition from Australia has been remanded in custody as he faces allegations of historic sexual offending against two family members in Belfast.

The man appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court charged with indecent assault on a female and gross indecency with a child.

He cannot be identified in order to protect the identities of the two complainants.

Prosecutors allege the offences took place over a lengthy period, from January 1969 to March 1983.

The accused was first arrested in Victoria in 2023 and was brought back to Northern Ireland on Wednesday after extradition proceedings.

Police said officers from the PSNI worked alongside Home Office officials and Australian authorities to trace him, locate him and detain him.

He is wanted to stand trial on 17 charges in total, comprising 14 allegations of indecent assault and three counts of gross indecency with a child.

The court heard the man joined the hearing remotely from Musgrave Police Station, appearing in a wheelchair. He did not speak during the short proceedings.

Defence barrister Jonathan Browne, instructed by solicitor Owen Beattie, told the court there was no challenge to the way the international arrest warrant had been carried out.

Mr Browne also said his client was not applying for bail at this stage.

The court was given no further information about the alleged incidents.

District Judge Anne Marshall remanded the man in custody until 20 August, when a date is to be set for a preliminary enquiry.
