A day at a German wildlife park turned frightening when an eight-year-old girl was mauled by a wolf inside an animal enclosure and left badly injured, prompting an emergency helicopter evacuation to hospital, police said.
“The girl was attacked and seriously injured by at least one wolf within an animal enclosure while she was there with two other children and a staff member,” police said.
Investigators are now trying to piece together exactly what happened. Police said in a statement that “the precise circumstances of the incident are the subject of an ongoing police investigation”.
The incident occurred in Baruth/Mark, a town south of the German capital, Berlin. Police said the accompanying staff member and the two other children were not hurt.
According to the park’s website, the facility is home to brown bears, lynx and both grey and arctic wolves. The park said it had temporarily closed, but it did not provide additional details.
