In a surprise personnel shift from the West Wing, US President Donald Trump announced that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will step down at the end of the month so she can devote more time to her family.

Ms Leavitt, 28, marked the moment with a message on social media site X, calling the job a defining chapter in her life. “Serving as the White House Press Secretary over the past year and a half has been the honor and adventure of a lifetime,” she wrote.

Mr Trump signaled that her departure will not end her involvement in his political operation. In a post on Truth Social, he said, “Karoline will now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party, as we work to defy History, and conclusively win the Midterm Elections.”

Ms Leavitt joined Trump’s 2024 campaign and later served as transition spokeswoman before the US president tapped her to become White House press secretary — a selection that made her the youngest person ever appointed to the role.
