A deadly shooting outside a police station on one of Barcelona’s busiest streets has triggered an urgent investigation, with officers now searching for a suspect believed to have fled on foot.
According to reports from several local media outlets, the man was shot at around 10am local time (9am Irish time) on Carrer de Balmes on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place outside a police station that handles passport and identity document processing, drawing attention to the attack’s location in a typically high-traffic area.
Catalan news website Diari de Catalunya said police described the victim as a middle-aged man.
It is understood the gunman ran from the scene after the shooting and later discarded the weapon.
The gun was found a short distance away, and a search is continuing to locate the suspected shooter.
Police sources told the Catalan outlet that CCTV recorded images of the alleged gunman.
