A suspected bomb plot that rocked Monaco and wounded three people has taken a grim turn after Ukrainian authorities said the prime suspect was found shot dead back home in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office said the woman, suspected of carrying out an attack targeting a wealthy Ukrainian-born businessman in the principality, was discovered dead with gunshot wounds.
In a statement, prosecutors said they also detained an employee of Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR), who said he killed the woman together with another suspect.
Anastasiia Berezovska, 39, was named as the chief suspect in an Interpol Red Notice, which said she was Ukrainian, spoke German and was wanted by authorities in Monaco for attempted murder, placing an explosive device in a public place with criminal intent, and criminal conspiracy.
Three people were wounded in the blast on 29 June
Details released by Monaco’s deputy prosecutor last week outlined a rapid getaway: the attacker is believed to have left the principality on foot into nearby France before escaping by car to Germany, travelling through several European countries, including Italy.
Sources said Ukrainian-born Vadym Yermolaiev, along with his partner and son, were wounded in the attack on Monday last week.
Mr Yermolaiev was given Cypriot nationality in 2019 and was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in 2023.
Ukrainian media reported this was for doing business in Russian-occupied Crimea.
