Spotify is preparing to put a clearer label on the growing wave of machine-made music and personalities on its platform, announcing it will roll out a new “AI persona” badge in mid-September to flag content producers that are AI-generated rather than real people.

The streaming giant said the change responds directly to user frustration about profiles that look like human artists at first glance. “Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” Spotify said in a statement.

The initiative marks the Swedish company’s latest bid to lift the curtain on how music and creator identities are produced, as the wider music industry wrestles with concerns that AI-generated content could flood streaming catalogues and make it harder for listeners to know what — and who — they are hearing.

Spotify has already begun tightening its identity signals. In April, it introduced a “verified by Spotify” badge, indicating that a profile has been reviewed and meets the company’s authenticity standard.

Now, Spotify says it will expand those visual cues beyond creators who proactively identify themselves as AI. “Alongside artist profiles that self-disclose as AI personas, we will also start applying badges to relevant profiles,” the company said.

Spotify also drew a line around promotion: it will not place AI personas in editorial or personalised recommendations, the company said, unless a user has chosen to follow an AI persona.
