Albufeira is a popular destination for Irish tourists

Nightlife in the Algarve resort town of Albufeira turned into a scene of chaos early this morning when a drunk driver ploughed into pedestrians, injuring 12 people — including two police officers and a Polish national — Portuguese police said.

Authorities said the suspect, a 35-year-old Portuguese man, ignored an order to stop at about 3am and then accelerated away, driving along a street lined with bars and night clubs in the beach town.

The interior ministry said in a statement that the injured included two police officers and 10 other people between the ages of 18 and 22.

One of those hurt was listed in critical condition.

Police said the man recorded more than twice the legal alcohol limit in his blood and was detained. He is expected to face possible charges including causing bodily harm and dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol.
